Hi Birders,
During the NSW & ACT Twitchathon 28-29 October, not only were records made
in the highest number of species seen in any one Twitching event in NSW
(233), and the highest number of participants (129) and possibly the highest
amount of funds raised, it was also a time for seeing some rare birds in NSW
too.
These observations included seeing 4 Stubble Quail at the Dairy Swamp,
Tuggerah (Central Coast Champions), a male Blue-billed Duck at the Walka
Water works, Maitland (Hunter Home Brewers and the Dodgy Drongos);male
Australian Shelduck on 28/10 at the Dairy Swamp, Tuggerah (Jizz Birders); 2
Great Crested Grebes at Meroo Lake (Wooden Spoonbills);a Shy Albatross at
Bawley Point (Stoned Terns); an Australasian Bittern at Fivebough Swamp
(Crazy Capital Chooks), an Osprey at Sawtell (Counting Crows); 2 Pacific
Bazas building a nest Mardi, near Tuggerah (Central Coast Champions), a
Black Falcon near Walka Waterworks (Lessticum Phoradae); Buff-banded Rail at
Sydney Olympic Park ( Warbler Specklers Less One); and Pectoral Sandpiper in
Hawkesbury Marshes (Grey-toilet Thrushes);
While a Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove could be expected at Iluka and, an
Immatuture at Sydney Olympic Park was a bigger surprise (Black-necked
Stalkers & Liar Birders); 2 Blue-winged Parrots in Binya SF (Happy
Wanderers) were late returning to Victoria; Barking Owls near Armidale &
Sandgate SF Gulargumbone (Cheerful Drongos and Whacked-out Woodswallows) and
a Powerful Owl in Canberra (Lucky Bustards).
Among the Honeyeaters, Regent Honeyaters were seen at Gwydir Park TSR
Kingstown (Eastern Whiplashes); Singing Honeyeater at Leard SF, Boggabri
(Dodgy Drongos); Painted Honeyeaters were at Binya SF, Glen Davis (2
locations) & at Bulga (Spangled Drongos, Central Coast Champions & Old
Birds); and Binya SF also turned on a Gilbert's Whistler (Out For a Lark); A
Chestnut-rumped Heathwren at The Poplars Glen Davis was a surprise
(Red-faced Parrots); a Fignird at Boydtown (Spineless Spinebills) might be
the furthest south that the bird has been record in NSW; Even Plum-headed
Finches were found in the Hunter Valley (Hunter Thickheads).
