Have just spent a few days in North-western Victoria visiting Wyperfeld,
Murray-Sunset, Hattah and a number of other areas on the way around.
Re. returning Bee-eaters, saw plenty of pairs at a number of locations,
including regularly encountering birds along mallee roadside strips.
Numbers of migrants was generally low. Incredibly I didn't observe a single
WWTriller. Those that I have seen this spring have been further south. Also
no Cockatiels or Budgies. There were moderate numbers of Woodswallows,
mostly in areas of flowering mallee, and I too noticed a higher than normal
percentage of Masked to White-browed. There was a lot of nesting activity
occurring.
There were still a few Orange Chats at Lake Tyrell, and a couple of Black
Honeyeaters in the small reserve at Gama adjacent to the Sunraysia highway.
Also White-fronted Honeyeaters here and there in flowering areas.
A Malleefowl mound was still active despite the dry, and most of the
resident specialities were there to be found as normal. Regent Parrots were
easy to find nearer to their breeding areas of Hattah and Wyperfeld. Pink
Cockies also were regularly observed at north and south Wyperfeld, but just
2 at Hattah, where I've seen very few in the last couple of years.
At a Chestnut-Crowned Babbler site there were 18 birds in one small area.(a
sighting for the Atlas). There was a lot of displaying and "dancing" around
going on. I think perhaps two seperate family groups were having a social.
Heard a Red-lored Whistler in Murray-sunset, but the little blighter
wouldn't show !
Regards,
Simon Starr ( hoping for a wet summer :) )
