This morning (8th October 2006), I enjoyed some fantastic birding at
Prospect Reservoir (approx. 40km west of Sydney CBD). The local and
summer visitors are certainly making their presence felt with all their
beautiful song and appearances.
There was an excellent number and diversity of open forest/woodland
birds (as often can be in this great place) with a pair of Grey Goshawks
nesting (they were using the same nest as last year with female sitting
low on nest and male out hunting nearby); Bar-shouldered Dove; 2 Pallid,
Fan-tailed and Horsfield's Bronze-cuckoos; a Sacred Kingfisher; 2 Rufous
Songlarks; White-winged Trillers (watched 2 adult males having a bit of
competition over a female with them); a male Crested Shrike-tit; a few
Golden and loads of Rufous Whistlers; a male Leaden Flycatcher; a Rufous
Fantail; Variegated and Superb Blue Wrens; several White-throated
Gerygones; Weebills; several Varied Sitellas; Noisy Friarbirds; Red and
Little Wattlebirds; heaps of Yellow-faced as well as several of both
Brown-headed and Scarlet Honeyeaters; Mistletoebird; several
Olive-backed Orioles and finally a flock of at least 20 White-browed
Woodswallows flying over and heading westwards.
In and around the reservoir itself I saw at least 60 Hoary-headed, 70
Great-crested and a few Australasian Grebes; 137 Australian Pelicans; a
Royal Spoonbill; a Great Egret; 25 Black Swan; 5 Australasian Shoveler
(first time I have seen them here); at least 3 Whistling Kites; the
resident adult pair of White-bellied Sea-eagles; a Buff-banded Rail and
Reed Warblers.
A very good morning in my local patch.
