Mick Roderick raises some issues about the breeding range of the Orange Chat
in NSW.
While the second Atlas 1998-2002 does not contain many breeding records it
must be remembered that much of NSW was in drought during the period that
the data was collected, particularly 2001-2. If one looks at the First
Atlas 1978-1981, there are many more breeding records shown, many of which
are on the eastern limits of its range. So combining the two Atlases
together, you get are more comprehensive view of the breeding range in NSW.
Furthermore, the distribution as given in "The Handlist of Birds in NSW"
1981 (Morris, McGill & Holmes),is as follows:
"Western & Plains. Eastern limits flucutate according to rainfall:
approximately Moree Watercourse, Macquarie Marshes, Condobolin, Goolgowi and
Caldwell. Records further east include Gilgandra, Parkes, Bumbaldy and Rand.
Mainly low scrublands near water." I believe that this given distribution
still holds today, and most breeding records that I have are definately west
of the Moree Watercourses (now known as the Gwydir wetlands) and Macquarie
Marshes (where they regularly occur) and they are usually found around Lake
Cargelligo, then across to Fivebough Swamp at Leeton and south to Barham.
Other eastern recent records include Jerilderie (2002), Lake Cowal & Wyalong
(1985) and the Warrumbungles NP. Reported breeding at Barham, Griffith,
Narrandera & Grong Grong in 1981 & observed at Mungindi in 1980.
A breeding record at at Boggy Creek is therefore unusual, but in view of
some previous reports, not exceptional.
