Folks,
At Penrhyn again from 12 to 4pm - no Golden Plovers or Curlew Sandpiper. The
wind was a breezy to strong ENE to ESE.
A pleasant surprise was a moulting Grey Plover - the 'bruiser' of the plovers
(it could play No8 for the Pluvialis Rugby team!). It had lost some 60-70% of
its black plumage, had white undertail coverts and the distal part of the
belly, had black and white barred tail with white rump. Noticeable was the
amount of white on the forehead extending well up and into the gray of the
head. The long deep black bill made it look tough and no-nonsense.
I was later joined by Rob Gibbons and we both saw a White-Fronted Tern (short
red-brown legs, white band top-edge to primaries, carpal triangle (not bar),
long black bill.
Once again easterlies have brought in some less common birds to Penrhyn.
I will be going down tomorrow - a week since the AGP was seen. If it doesn't
turn up tomorrow I have to assume that its most likely gone - has anyone been
to Shoalhaven Heads recently?
