Hi All, just a few interesting items,
I walked through Centennial Park this morning ad had brilliant views in the
direct early morning sun of an adult Baillon's Crake, just sitting on the edge
of some Juncus sp. on the margins of the ilsand in the Randick Pond (the island
in the end near Busby's pond, not the other one, in case anyone is interested
to follow it up). Even saw it fly for a metre or so when a dusky moorhen
chased it off. A new one for my park and Eastern Suburbs list, and fairly
suprising given that the water levels on the whole are still quite high. Also
a Sacred Kingfisher, my first for the park in four years.
Also on monday afternoon a single Topknot Pigeon in Queens Park (park, not the
suburb) near the interesection of Bourke St and Queens Park Rd. Landed briefly
in a fruiting Moreton bay Fig (Ficus macrophylla) but alighted again when it
was harassed by Noisy Miners and was driven off to the north east. This is the
second sighting of this species I've had in a month, since i saw two together
flying in Centennial Park on 22/8, but I was slack and didn't report them.
Some winter visitors gone such as Brown Gerygones and Yellow-faced honeyeaters,
but Golden Whistler and Grey Fantail still here. Summer visitors here or
arriving, heard my first Channel-billed Cuckoo last thursday (14/9) but no Koel
as yet, Fairy Martins nesting, Reed Warblers now singing. Cheers.
