G/day all,
I have just returned from Magnetic Island Nth Queensland. Coming from
Melbourne i hoped to add a few birds to my list as well as enjoy a week of R
& R, although my partner say's there's not to much rest when you holiday
with a crazy birder (the crazy was her description, i think i'm normal !)
On our first day i saw my first lifer with a lone Black Naped Tern in Alma
Bay, i was off to a good start but was only able to add one more, a White
Eared Monarch which was seen with Spectacled Monarch and Black Faced
Monarchs, within 5 mins and 10 metres strolling.
Still, as your lists increases it does become harder and harder to see new
birds and i was rapt to get those two. We saw a good variety of species with
the number of raptors being a feature.
Bushthicknees could be found everywhere, strolling along shop fronts, in car
parks, parkland and bush areas, much to my partners annoyance. Before we
book our next tropical island holiday she says where not going if the
Thicknees are present, as she didn't appreciate being kept awake night after
night with their calling. (It was music to my ears but i didn't tell her
that !)
Magnetic Island has a good variety of habitats, mammals, birds and beautiful
beaches and is well worth a visit.
Regards from Col.
