Jacqui,

They are quite common (but very hard to see) along the Spit at the WTP - in
the same spot that the Grass Owl has been seen.  The easiest time to see them
is at dusk and at a low tide. You could try near the pool 30 metres left of
the information sign; or a further 200 metres along, at the point that the
path turns right. The call's quite distinctive, so listen out.

They have also been seen quite recently in the heathy area behind the bird
hide, and on the west side of Little River (near the bird hide).

At both sites Spotted Crake is quite common, and Spotless Crake is also
present.
