Dear all
Today I spent over 15 minutes watching a pair of Noisy Friarbirds
meticulously climbing up and down the trunk of my 3 and a half yr old
Eucalyptus sideroxylon (now about 6-7 meters high), pecking something
off the surface. They never dropped to the ground and foraged from about
20 cm above ground level to 3 m, occasionally stopping to rest on the
first few branches from 2.5m up. It was blowing a very gusty wind so no
doubt they were avoiding the tree tops. They were eventually sent
packing by one of the resident Red Wattlebirds. On investigating the
tree trunk later, I could only find a few ants so guess this is what
they were after, although I noticed they sometimes snatched something
from the air - there were a lot of small insects flying around.
Later in the afternoon, 11 green Satin Bowerbirds took over the grass,
nibbling some native understorey plants and clover. They also took
unripe mulberries and were eating the flowers of my neighbour's Liquid
Amber. A male Common Myna took over the birdbath and half-hearted
attacks from the bowerbirds failed to stop him completing his bath. The
female Myna who dropped in next, was a bit upset by the bowerbirds and
after only two splashes, left them in possession - it's a small ceramic
pedestal bath and at one point 5 bowerbirds were trying to bathe at the
same time.
