Hi Judith,
As well as the criteria you mention you should also consider "Shutter lag" 
as many birds don't seem to sit still for long, especially when you get the 
camera out!
I have a Panasonic DMC-FZ10, two years old now, and the only thing I think 
could be better is the amount of "noise" in the image at high ISO settings. 
It is especially noticeable on black or very dark areas of the image.
