I go back pre dark Ages and can recall in the blue tits in England doing
exactly the same thing. I can also recall reading some literature which advised
that the habit was unknown until the early 1950's and apparantly never before
the War.

Back in the Dark Ages, here in Melbourne milk used to be delivered to
one's home by a horse and cart with human assistant, well before dawn.
It came in glass bottles with a foil cap, and unhomogenized into the
bargain. Here in the Yarra Valley (Ivanhoe) there was a lot of cream in
it, from local Jersey herds.
And sometimes you'd go out to bring it in and there would be a hole in
the foil and quite a lot of the creamy-top missing. This happened to
neighbours as well, and one watched through his venetian blinds early
one morning. He saw a 'crow' walk up cautiously, peck the bottle-cap,
and drink as far down as it could reach.
We all got boxes to protect the milk after that.
