Where is your backyard? I am not sure what you mean by "darker than normal", 
and what is normal. Normal is different between the two species. The major 
identification differences (among others) is whether the back is black 
(Scarlet) or grey (Flame) and whether the red colour goes up to the chest or 
the chin but I am sure you can see these features from the books. If they "did 
not stay around long enough for definite id" then, I would say that you did not 
see them long enough for the colour you thought you saw as "darker than 
normal", as other than an illusion of being darker. On a many million to one 
probability they would not be hybrids.
