Grass Owl at WTP

Hi All,

As the photographer of the Barn Owl, i'd like to clear a few things up.

On Friday, 30 odd people were located at the Spit sign at the T
intersection. I left my car here, but went with others about 500 metres to
the east along the road. When I came back for my car at the sign, I had to
head east along the road again, to turn around, where the owl was almost
immediately flushed.

The photo was taken about 50 metres to the east of the Spit sign at the T
intersection. The owl flushed from the saltmarsh only 20 metres from the
sign and flew easterly where it landed on a post a further 30 metres down
the road. Whether it was the same owl that the 30 odd saw in flight, I
dont know, but it was definently in the same geographical area.

I hear good sightings were made last night, can anyone comment further?

Peter

[Birding-Aus] Grass Owl at WTP

Hi All,

A brief comment about the report of the Grass Owl at the WTP on Friday
11th August. There seems to be some confusion about the status of the
reports of a Grass Owl at the WTP. The following brief comments may add
some light / clarification to this report.

The basis of this confusion has arisen from a photograph of a Barn Owl
(see Birdline ? see http://www.eremaea.com/BirdlineRecentSightings.aspx?
Culture=en-AU&Birdline=1&Path=8 ? good photo!), taken at the far-
eastern end of The Spit on the same night.

On Friday (11 August) I went to The Spit at the WTP (and along with
approx. 30 others) and viewed a reasonably large darked back Tyto,
which arose from the salt marsh at the western end of the Spit.

Half an hour later I was shown of a photograph a Barn Owl, which was
taken at the far-eastern section of The Spit. Quite clearly, based on
the geographical location (the far-eastern Spit), the time that the
photo was taken, and the general colouration of the bird, this is not
the Tyto viewed at the western end of The Spit on the same evening.

Cheers,

Tim
