I guess that nobody has seen the suspect Pied Oystercatcher at Shoalhaven
Heads. Maybe it has moved on? I was told by local shorebird volunteer Rex,
that a number of birdwatchers were spotted last Saturday morning with scopes in
hand. No luck?
Maybe a misidentification, but after working at protecting Pied Oystercatcher
nests for the last seven years, I thought I had a pretty good eye for them. I
particularly noticed the long pointed bill, unlike the regular nesting pair at
the Heads. Maybe a northern Aus form? Unfortunately there were no other Pieds
close by when I saw it, so I couldn't compare the leg size, but they did seem
shorter than usual. Also there was definately more white in the wing.
After looking at Bob Inglis's photos, I'll know exactly what to look for next
time. Also I am off to the south island of NZ tommorrow for a weeks holiday
and expect to see at least one of the 30 000 plus SIPOS there. Hopefully I
will know what I am talking about when I get back.
Maybe I'll bring a few back to teach our Pied Oystercatchers how to forage and
nest in farmland. It has done the world of good for the species in NZ. They
would have to return of course, unless they become movie stars, musicians or
news readers, we can then claim them as Australian.
