At the weekend I took a trip up through the Flinders Ranges to Lyndhurst
looking for Chestnut-Breasted Whiteface and other local rarities. I
contacted the Scammell's at Mount Lyndhurst, and they kindly allowed me
access to their property.
At Scott's hill Lookout I found a Short-tailed Grasswren. It was S of
the
lookout. About 80m downhill there is a small post with a blue triangle
on
it. the Grasswrens were feeding about 10m East of the post.
Then on to Lyndhurst where I tried the "gates" site first. About 600m
from
the road the track goes down hill to a dried creek. Just West of here
(<10m) was a Cinnamon Quail-thrush. The only other birds here were
Black-faced Woodswallow and White-winged Fairywren.
Next was the "Rusty car" site. In about 90 minutes I had a very
fleeting
glimpse of a Grasswren, and lots of White-winged fairywrens.
I came back to the "Rusty Car" site the following morning at 0730 and
heading N from the parking area followed the creek round to the back of
the
hill with the mine. Again, lots of Fairywrens but not much else. I
decide to head straight back tro the car and approx 100m nw of the
parking
area is a couple of small, well vegetated (for this area) hillocks.
Here
there were 3-4 Rufous Fielwrens, and 2-3 Thick-billed Grasswrens. On
the
flats between here and the parking were anopther 4-6 Grasswrens. A
small
movement by the mine entrance caught my eye, and as I approached, there
were
8-10 CBWF feeding within 10m of the mine. they were very flighty, and
would
not allow approach within 20-25m.
No sightings of Redthroat or Orange Chat which were my other targets,
but a
very healthy Wedge-tailed Eagle population - I estimate 50-60 sightings
including 5 soaring together between Lyndhurst and Leigh Creek..
