Sunday morning walk alongside the Nepean River at Penrith (55 km west of
Sydney, NSW) brought a couple of surprises.
Firstly I had great views of a Rufous Fantail in thick bush alongside the
river, first time I have seen one here in seven years, although Grey
Fantails are common. Also in the undergrowth were a host of Superb Fairy
Wrens, Red-browed Finches and a pair of Eastern Yellow Robins.
Next I came across a fallen tree hanging over the river which normally is a
good spot for Darters, however today it held 10 cormorants, one Little Black
Cormorant and 9 Little Pied, mainly immature birds with one having a
completely russet breast. A single Pelican was patrolling the river.
Further along in a small swamp area was a Royal Spoonbill, so all in all a
nice morning walk.
