Michael Wood, who used to contribute to birding-aus from South Australia,
has relocated to Toowoomba and he came down for a chat yesterday afternoon.

Not long before Michael got here, one of the Brown Goshawks that I
mentioned in a posting the other day came down to the rock/pool that is just
outside my window. They often drop into trees fairly close to the house, but
never this close before.

I grabbed the camera and just pointed and pressed. I didn't dare raise the
venetian blind slats that were in the way, so I just took a photograph
through the blinds and the window pane. Just as well that I did, because I'd
only got one shot before she (a big bird) lifted off and moved to the
cover of a nearby tree.

The one photo I got is now on my website - go to www.abberton.org and
follow the first link "View Latest Photographs" or go direct to
www.abberton.org/birds2005.htm

You'll see it's the imm with the distinctively pale head that I spoke about.
Quite heavily barred beneath, which doesn't show in the photograph.

When Michael arrived, we spent a couple of hours sitting on the verandah,
yarning, and picked up 7 raptor spp in the process - Brown Goshawk, Brown
Falcon, Nankeen Kestrel, Black-shouldered Kite, Whistling Kite, Black Kite,
and Wedge-tailed Eagle. You can never predict things - Australian Hobby and
Collared Sparrowhawk which are both pretty regular here didn't show, but
Black Kite, which we almost never see, did.

Between 50 & 60 spp all up seen and heard during the afternoon, including a
couple of Channel-billed Cuckoos, Nankeen Night-heron, Spangled Drongo,
Dollarbirds and Red-rumped Parrots.
