Like (or so it seems) a number of folk  I have been seeking a new 'scope and not unnaturally wanted the best I could I could get for my money.

I finally settled for  an angled Kowa 60 mm with a 30 W eye piece. I phoned around all the main dealers I could find on the net, including interstate, and was delighted with the price and the service I received at Adelaide Optical, just outside the Adelaide Arcade on the Grefell St end.

Ask for Karina (the boss's daughter no less).   Karina called and emailed me a number of times; gave me good advice and importantly wasn't pushy.

Subject: [BIRDING-AUS] Spotting scope

A friend is planning to buy her first scope and has asked me for advice. I am a bit out of date on what is available.

I am still happy with my Kowa, a TSN3 bought in 1992 I think. It has had an extremely hard life having been to many foreign countries and taken on many rough trips in Australia. I often go out in groups where I am prepared to let everyone use it and the lens has been dropped by people who try to focus by turning it. It has never fogged up in the wet tropics (a problem with its predecessor). It has been repaired twice both times for the same thing - the internal effects of being dropped from a height, blown over on to a hard surface in a gale, and banged about over a long period. The repair service is very good. I have been pleased with the Kowa as optically fine, pretty resilient, and (when i bought it) reasonably priced.

I have had a faint twinge of jealousy when looking through other people's new Swarowskis. I have heard someone complain about his Nikon.

My friend had not thought about photography through the scope but owns both a digital camera and an older SLR.

What are the recommended telescopes at present? Recommended Web sources for comparisons of locally available scopes would also be welcome.

Thanks
Margaret
