There are many programs on the market - these are some that I know of:

Bird Recorder http://66.39.95.6/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=ASBS&Product_Code=684A&Category_Code=MS
Wildlife Lister http://home.surewest.net/bruwebb/purchase.htm
BirdBase/BirdArea http://members.aol.com/sbsp/
AviSys http://www.njaudubon.org/NatureNotes/avisys.html
BirdInfo http://www.netspeed.com.au/birds/birdinfo/

All of these are I think PC (maybe Mac as well?) based and with the exception of BirdInfo are non-Australian (but have Aussie lists).

There is also Eremaea - http://www.eremaea.com/Welcome.aspx which is an online recording system.

They all have their good points and bad points - I used to use a package called Merlin which was quite good but when the author went of to become a Buddhist monk I decided to use my IT background to write my own software - 3 years later it reamins "6 months away from completion: as it has for the last 2 years at least... but at least it does what I want!
