In view of Alastair's note regarding the expected publication later this year of the revised Australian Checklist, 'The Taxonomy and Species of Birds of Australia & its Territories' by Christidis & Boles, I list below some changes I anticipate regarding species as currently defined in the 1994 edition; i.e. ignoring taxonomic changes. A lot has happened in the last 11 years!
Additions to the ?Species List? (26)
Spotted Whistling Duck
South Island Pied Oystercatcher
Papuan Spine-tailed Swift
Asian House Martin
Blue Rock Thrush
Blue and White Flycatcher
Additions to the ?Species List? elevated from the ?Supplementary List? (13)
Weka (extinct on Macquarie Island)
American Golden Plover
Lesser Black-backed Gull
Additions to the ?Supplementary List? (23)
Species that are the subject of claims that may be genuine. Several have yet to be assessed by BARC. Some have been reported in publications (23).
Chinese/Javan Pond Heron
Western Reef Egret
Middendorff?s Grasshopper Warbler
Asian Brown Flycatcher
Streaked-headed (White-spotted) Mannikin
Species that might be removed from the ?Supplementary List? (3+)
Long-billed Dowitcher (proved to be a Short-billed Dowitcher).
Cox?s Sandpiper (proved to be a hybrid).
Tawny Pipit (see Johnstone & Storr, WA Birds, vol. 2),
?. and probably some others.
