Hi all
I spent the day at Birds Australia Gluepot Reserve ('Gluepot') and was
curious what the birdlife would be like after it reaching 45C last Saturday.
I found 8 dead Masked and White-browed Woodswallows in one of the bird
hides, some with their beaks still open and tongue hanging out, on the floor
in the corners - presumably where it was coolest, but they just didn't make
it. Fortunately there were massive flocks of live woodswallows around, in
one place at least 80 Budgerigars were with them.
Other good species were 3 Red-lored Whistlers (3 heard singing, good views
of one), quite a few Gilbert's Whistlers, 2 White-browed Treecreepers, small
flocks of Crimson Chats and one immature Orange Chat, a Pied Honeyeater, a
Little Buttonquail, Southern Scrubrobins, plenty of Striated Grasswrens and
2 Shy Heathwrens, and a flock of Miners with at least 2 pure Black-eareds.
The mallee still looks excellent - although it's now dry, it has really
bounced back from the last few years of drought. It just shows that if you
choose the right day, the mallee is worth a visit any time of year!
