Hello all,

I have spent a great day birding in the Upper King River valley, which is approximately 50km south of Wangaratta. A lot of wetter forest species were found which aren't that common or rarely seen in this area.

I began in the morning along the west branch of the King River in Cheshunt South. Small groups of Gang-gang Cockatoos were observed feeding on the seed pods of Ovens Wattles. Eastern Whipbirds could be heard calling from blackberry patches. In the peppermint forest a White-throated Gerygone and male Cicadabird were seen. The most startling observation was of a Little Wattlebird feeding off mistletoe flowers. This species is usually seen on the southern side of the Great Divide. Another two good sightings were a Rufous Fantail in thick tea-tree along the river and an Olive Whistler in a thick patch of blackberries and Swamp Gums.

Next stop was Sandy Flat (4WD access only) which is behind Lake William Hovell. A female Rose Robin was observed while a another Cicadabird and a Brush Cuckoo could also be heard calling. Two Rufous Fantails were observed along the King River and a pair of Eastern Whipbird were seen moving around in thick fernery. Later a Brush Cuckoo was spotted in a peppermint and at Lake William Hovell itself another was heard.
