After raising 4 Koel chicks over the last couple of years, our Magpie-larks
have, for the first time, raised their own chicks. Three youngsters have
left the nest and are being feed - two with the female, and one with the
male. Within a couple of days of raising the Koel very early after their
arrival, the poor female was back on the nest, but at least with 3 chicks to
show for it all.

While we were out at Dunethin Rock [upstream in the Maroochy River, SEQ], a
couple of days ago, we suspected the Willie Wagtails had a nest. After
careful searching, we finally found it in a Casuarina, 20 cm above the
waters of the flooded river. Four chicks, well grown but with tiny tails
still, were all squeezed INTO the wee nest - one bird more or less under the
other three who were at right-angles to it. The nest was beautifully
concealed, but I was surprised that since they were of a reasonable size,
the parents hadn't moved the chicks to a safer spot. There have been more
storms, so I guess the water hasn't dropped much.

Cheers

Robyn
