Some information of interest to many of you (thanks to Gil for passing it on):

On Saturday 26 November, Governor John Landy launched  a new edition of
the iconic pocket-sized field guides, first published by the Gould
League 30 years. Six of the seven books in Birds of South-eastern
Australia series focus on a habitat (urban areas, ranges, beaches,
inland waters, dry country, and farmlands), and one book looks at rare
birds. In over 720 pages all the birds we commonly see and hear are
covered. In a fantastic new full colour production from Overthefence
Press, the illustrations of Susan McInnes are beautifully reproduced.
All the text has been updated by noted ornithologist Alan Reid.

This new edition is a commemorative set dedicated to natural history
artist and farmer Susan McInnes who, with her husband Ivan, died in a
natural disaster at Tamboon Inlet in Eastern Victoria in 2002.

Response to the news of the new edition has been phenomenal. The
launch, at Blackburn Lake Sanctuary,  was a celebration of the natural
environment, an endorsement of preservation, a valuing of passionate
committed people, and an honouring of lives well lived.

A boxed set of seven books sells for RRP $95 and individual books for
$14.95. Books can be ordered directly from the publisher or purchased
from many bookshops.
