EAGLEHAWK NECK BOAT TRIP (From Dunalley)- 25 November 2005

GROUP: Peter and Hazel Britton, Geoff Bromfield, Tom Green,
Chris and Rosemary
Lester, Grant Penrhyn, Frank Reindt, Bill Wakefield, Felix Wilson and
Annette Young.

VESSEL/SKIPPER: Pauletta / John Males with deckie, Brock Males.

WEATHER: Initially, overcast, very cool to cold with a light NW
wind of 5 -
10 knots. In the afternoon, the weather cleared up and became fine and
suuny with only a few clouds. The NNW wind was less than 5 knots.

SEA: Initially, 1.5 m swell with chop of less than 0.5 m
decreasing to a swell of about 1 m with no chop.

ACTIVITY: Sailed 07.10 from Dunalley. Headed out through
Blackman's Bay through the
Narrows into Marion Bay and E to outside the shelf. Berleyed from 09.40
at the first stop (about 18 nm from the Narrows and 1.0 nm past the shelf)
at 42o 43.04'S 148o20.84'E in 160 fathoms with water temperature at 14.4o C
until 10.30. Continued out and stopped at 11.00 (at about 5.0 nm past
the shelf) in 700 fathoms (14.4o C) at 42o 54.24'S 148o 24.58'E until 12.00.
Moved in a north-westerly direction (stopping about 21 nm from the
Narrows) to 42o 52.36'S 148o 19.64'E and stopped at 12.40 in 80 fathoms
(14.9oC). Started back at 13.15, passing close by isscher island and returning
to Dunalley at about 15.30.

MAMMALS: None identified.

BIRDS: A surprisingly pleasant day where the forecasted 15 -
20 knot
winds and 4 m swells did not arrive. But, disappointingly quiet for birds
in both species and numbers. The highlight was a GOLDEN PLOVER out past the
shelf at our first stop. It
flew towards us from the direction of Dunalley calling and looked at us
before continuing out E (to New Zealand?)
