I too have seen Mallee Fowl on the Eyre Pen. bust into flight after
being startled, directly followed by a very ungraceful landing 20-30
metres away.

My own experiences from the Victorian mallee and western NSW is that if
approach quickly by vehicle, especially, that they will fly first upto
100m away they run from there.
