Hi Steve,

            You're right. The first to hatch is the first egg laid and will
not necessarily be the offspring with the most 'fit' set of genes for the
environment. The evolutionary implications of chick aggression is not so much
selection for the strongest chick, but a battle for each chick to dominate the
inherently limited supply of parental investment.
