A few days ago I was sitting outside listening to the usual evening sounds around my house; King parrots, C Rosellas. SBFW, Straited Pardalotes, Kookaburras etc etc. The peace was broken as three Sulphur Crested Cockatoos came in with their usual racous screetches. Instead of landing on their usual spot they flew directly to a branch high in a Eucalypt where there is a hole that a couple of Gang-Gangs have been investigating very thoroughly, presumably with thoughts of nesting. The Cockies landed near the hole and were immediately assailed by the female GG. She made a loud, long drawn out, low pitched wailing sound while flying at the Cockies repeatedly. she continued to fly at them and make this sound until they flew off with plenty of screetching (and with their tails between their legs!!!). The sound the GG made was about 5 times the duration of the usual 'creek' and was of a much lower pitch. There is no mention of this sound in HANZAB. Has anyone ever heard this call? The female stayed on a nearby branch after the SCC's had left and about 5 minutes later the male emerged from the hole and flew away after a few soft calls between the pair.
