I thought I'd pass on this information in the interest of safety for those
visiting Werribee or Geelong Birding sites. There have been reports for some
time about speed cameras at various points along the Princes Freeway - it looks
like the cameras are now up and running in some places. We must always be
careful to observe road rules and drive carefully whether we are birding or not
- I'm not suggesting that you only observe speed limits around the Point Wilson
Overpass! But it might be worth taking extra care to stay under the limit at
this spot, and at other fixed cameras you find along the freeway.

Drive carefully!

NEXT time you are driving under the Point Wilson overpass on the Princes
Freeway, don't forget to smile because you could be caught on candid camera.
Workers were yesterday seen installing one of the eight fixed speed cameras
promised for the road between Melbourne and Geelong, with four in each
direction.

But despite the obvious nature of the installation, a spokesman for Police
Minister Tim Holding was yesterday maintaining the locations of the speed
cameras were a secret.

Spokesman Toby Hemming said the location of the speed cameras would probably be
obvious to anyone who cared to look.

But Mr Hemming said the interests of road safety were better served if the
Government did not advertise their locations.

``They're not hard to spot,'' Mr Hemming said.

He said he was not sure in what order they were being installed, and the plan
was to have them all operating early next year.

Speed cameras were expected to be fully operational in 2002, but have had
several delays, including camera malfunctions on the Western Ring Road.
