Blue Mountains Bird Observers held their monthly mid-week outing yesterday,
along the track to Old Pt. Pilcher at Medlow Bath. As we reached our
meeting point we were welcomed by the song of a Flame Robin and there he
was, sitting on the fence, singing his heart out. A new bird for many of
the group. As we walked along the track Rufous and Golden Whistlers were
seen, lots of Striated and Brown Thornbills and the usual Grey Fantail (we
always see a Grey Fantail, it is almost our mascot bird!)

A Grey Currawong and a Noisy Friarbird called but did not come close and
more Flame Robins were heard. Waratahs were is full bloom along the track
and in any open heathy area we watched and Australian Raven feeding from
many of the flowers, behaviour none of us had seen before.

A Yellow-tailed Black-cockatoo flew across the track and we could hear the
begging calls of a juvenile nearby. Morning tea was eaten at the lookout,
watching the clouds roll in above the Grand Canyon and listening to the
calls of Shining Bronze-cuckoos and Golden Whistlers in the valley below.
Surprisingly, we did not hear a lyrebird all morning.

On the walk back we had good views of a Scarlet Robin and a White-eared
Honeyeater and back at the cars there was the Flame Robin still singing and
displaying, certainly the "bird of the day". A total of 23 birds were seen
or heard.
