Migratory Cuckoos

At East Maitland in the Hunter Valley, NSW, and some 30 km from the sea, I heard my first Koel this morning and my first Channel-billed Cuckoo four days ago. This is consistent with the pattern of previous years, that is recording migratory cuckoos here two or three weeks after people closer to the coast report them. Perhaps this could be because migratory cuckoos tend to use the Australian Eastern Coastline to guide their migratory route. Or, possibly, it could be that the more skilled observers tend to live nearer to the coast. Any thoughts?
