Bird observed 08/09/05 at Coolmunda Dam near Inglewood, Southern Queensland.
Probably 17 - 18 cm
Very white below, plain pale light-brown or fawn above (i.e. no scalloping
or markings on feathers), excepting for pale rufous-washed collar to upper
breast sides.
Under tail tipped black.
Bill black, probably sharp and slightly down-curved. Black of bill
continued back through and past black eyes.
Forehead white.
Legs black, fine and longish.
In profile, it was very reminiscent of a Pratincole, but smaller.
Bobbed constantly. Moved furtively in short spurts. Did not fly even
when we were fairly close.
It was about 50 metres from the water on a very pebbly area.
There were a few Red-capped Plovers down on the water-line, but they looked
dissimilar and behaved quite differently.
I am no expert on waders, etc., and this has me completely baffled. The
other person who was with me and I both looked through several field guides
without success.
Hope I can get some help or perhaps someone else has seen the bird.
