G'day,

This is mainly for Sydney birders.

We have a pair of Ospreys nesting or nest-building on Narrabeen Lagoon. I
spoke to Alan Morris and he told me it is a first nesting record for Sydney.

Unfortunately the nest was not found by local birders, rather, by a local
surfer who notified our local paper, the "Manly Daily", which sent a
reporter to photograph two birds at the nest, one on the nest and one flying
above the nest with building material. I understand the "Daily Telegraph"
had a photographer there today.

Because of all this publicity and after discussing the matter with Alan I
believe there is no point in trying to keep this quiet, particularly as the
nest tree appears to be on a residential block almost alongside a busy road.
After all I saw Ospreys nesting on an artificial platform in the middle of a
seaside town, up north somewhere, I can't remember where.

My records show there has been two Ospreys around the Northern Beaches since
March 1997 but this is their first known nesting attempt. An Osprey was
photographed carrying a stick over Middle Creek (on Narrabeen Lagoon,) a
couple of years ago but no nest was ever found, young reported or other
evidence of breeding seen.

All we can do is wish these birds the best of luck.

Bruce.
