Nicholas,
While the ranger may have said the Magpie Geese are not captive, Canberra
Bird Notes Vol 30 Number 1, (Annual Bird Report 2003-2004) states, 'The
magpie geese at Tidbinbilla NR are best regarded as a semi captive
population and records from there are not included in the Annual Bird Report
(COG 2005).
I also had a look in Steve Wilson's 'Birds of the ACT - Two Centuries of
Change' (COG 1999). There is no record of Magpie Goose in this publication.
I hope this helps
Cheers
Alastair

Subject: Magpie Geese at Tidbinbilla ACT
Hi,
I have been out to Tidbinbilla on the past two weekends. The birding
highlight of the two trips was seeing a flock of around a dozen Magpie Geese
on one of the ponds on the wetland loop trail. I checked with one of the
rangers to make sure they weren't captive and was told that none of the
birds there are captive. I haven't seen Magpie Geese around Canberra before.
Other birds on the same walk were Musk Duck, White-eared Honeyeater, Grey
Shrike-thrush and Hardhead. I also saw several Platypus. On the way out of
the park I found about 8 Flame Robins along with some Yellow-rumped
Thornbill feeding on the ground in an area of short grass.
I also saw three Brown Falcon, as well as Wedge-tailed Eagle, Kestrel and
Black-shouldered Kite along the road back to Canberra.
On the trip the weekend before I walked the Camelback Trail through bush
which had been burnt in the fires. I saw Flame Robin, Spotted Pardalote,
White-eared Honeyeater and saw one Superb Lyrebird and heard three others.
