Just a couple of notes from the St Lucia campus of University of Queensland.
There is a group of up to 8 Bush Stone-curlews that sun themselves in the
morning
on the lawn, just down from Mill Road. Later in the day they move back under
the shrubs and try to hide amongst the bark mulch.
At lunch-time I was drawn out of my room by a huge commotion outside. A large
group of Noisy Miners alarm calling, accompanied by Torresian Crows and
Pied Butcherbirds. Later a Pied Currawong joined in. I went out to look
thinking
that it was either a predator or a possum but I could find nothing. I
spoke to some
of our vet students who were having lunch there but they could see nothing
either.
However, later one of them told me that it was a Barn Owl, that had flown
off and had
escaped the mobbers. She does know her birds and described the disc face
and pale
colour so I'm sure that her id of a Barn Owl is correct. I've yet to see
one on campus
but will look harder.
