Have just returned from a fortnight in Sturt NP (far nw NSW) with Dr. Dave Watson and many others on a uni field trip, was an absolute blast and have a few nice birds to report.
The highlights for me were the many ticks I picked up, Bourke's Parrot, Chirruping Wedgebill, White-backed Swallow, Torresian Crow, Cinnamon Quail-Thrush, Inland Dotterel, Orange Chat and Ground Cuckoo-shrike stand out, but by far the biggie of the trip was an immature Pacific Baza in Tibooburra, this was definitely not something I had on my POTENTIALS list. After rain the gibber plains are really greening up and birds were starting to get into breeding mode.
Have had to sink back down to earth and now listen instead of two butcherbird species combatting for the morning chorus to three feral species trying their best to impress (doesn't quite cut it in my books).
Would love the chance to visit the area again and hope I one day can.
