Best chance for White-streaked Honeyeater is at Shipton's Flat just
south of Cooktown. If you turn south from the main Lakeland-Cooktown
road into the road to Rossville and Wujul Wujul (the turn-off is about
25 km before Cooktown - not far past the Little Annan River crossing and
just before Black Mountain). Contrinue on past the Lions Den pub. About
7 km down the road, turn right into the Shipton's Flat road. When you
start to get into eucalypt forest, (from about 6 km up the road ??) that
is time to start looking. There seems to be a fair population in there
mostly in the eucalypt forest rather than in heath. There is a fork in
the road but continue right. The road goes on over a creek about 9-10 km
up (over a steel bridge) and up to a few shacks (dead end). Each time I
have been there, there have been quite a number of birds especially
between the road fork and the creek though there has always been a few
further up from the bridge.
I have not seen those about Laura but am inclined to think that
population is pretty scattered. This seems to be the case in many areas
with this bird. It can be a difficult one to get but I have always got
good numbers in the Shipton's Flat area.
