Hi Everyone,

I am posting this on behalf of Clive Allen, who is not on the list.

After last Saturday's outing of the Sunshine Coast Bird Observers' Group (July
2) , some members continued on with further birding at the mouth of the
Maroochy River. There they saw a strange gull which they were not able to
identify. They lost the bird when it flew out of range. However, strange gulls
have a history of hanging around, so perhaps people in the area could keep a
look out for it.

The bird is thought to be a juvenile/immature, because it had some juvenile
feathers. The observers dismissed it as a Kelp Gull, although I gather that the
size may be similar. It was considerably larger than a Silver Gull. The closest
species the observers could find in their literature was the Ring-billed Gull
Larus delawarensis, but they were by no means dedicated to this ID.

I don't know the observers, but can only suggest that you contact Clive Allen,
the convenor of SunBOG on who can lead you to the
observers. Clive was not one of the observers.

Cheers,

Jill Dening
