Dear all
This morning I saw a brown Pink Robin at Long Hollow Reserve, Beaumaris,
which provides an excuse for an update on our birds.
This was a very late first date for a Pink Robin, paralleling Val Ford's
report of the late date for her first Pink Robin in Sorrento.
Just one symptom of the frightening scarcity of cold weather birds with no
Shrike-Thrush so far, few Whistlers etc. etc. Only Spinebills and
Mistletoebirds seem to be here in about average numbers, possibly because
their food supplies - including exotic plants in gardens - are OK.
And on Port Phillip Bay NO penguins have been recorded yet, despite the
frequent high pressure weather, Gannets are scarce on a one-in-four year
scale and a small Little Black Cormorant flock arrived and then went in
disgust.
