Hi all,
Back from north east Victoria where l visited a number of sites including
Chiltern Mt Pilot National Park (sorry Mike R. just missed you), an area
where l am, like many others, constantly drawn to. Consistent with my
previous posting (8 May 2005) there are currently good numbers of Swift
Parrots hanging around the Park (at least 50 seen), with most observed
frantically feeding on flowering Mugga Gum Eucalyptus sideroxylon. The
largest group of birds (~30) were observed on Sunday at about 7.30am near
the intersection of Ballarat and Lancashire Roads (a few hundred metres from
where they were observed a month ago)(Melways Map 35 C4).
There is currently a moderate level of flowering across the Park, which will
hopefully improve after all the recent rain (50mm). An increase in the
nectar resource and cooler temperatures over the next few months will
hopefully entice Regent Honeyeaters to return, as they as certainly proving
to be elusive this year.
