Bald Coot

Well that goes to show the value of scientific names. As kids we always
called the Eurasian Coot the Bald Coot because of its white head (yeah I
know it's not strictly its head that is white :-). Must have been a very
localised use of a common name. I guess really that there is no 'wrong' in
common name use- a bit like Eucalyptus tereticornis being a red gum in NSW
and a blue gum in QLD.

I think that Colin Driscoll still has it wrong. A"Bald Coot" is a Swamphen,
not an Eurasian Coot.
