This afternoon at Winmalee (80km
west of Sydney) I heard a female Powerful Owl call for 4 minutes from 4.45 and
for 7 minutes from 5.10. I did not hear any response from a male but I was up
on a ridge perhaps 400m from where the calls seemed to be coming.
On another matter HANZAB records 1.2%
of total breeding records for Striated Thornbills for the month of June in NSW.
For the past 7 days a pair has been building a nest in a sapling Turpentine tree
at the edge of a fire trail in Winmalee. As I walked past the site yesterday
one bird landed on top of the structure and flared its wings presumably to
distract me as the other bird flew in to add something to the nest. I hope the
nest survives despite the large numbers of Pied Currawongs that are present
here throughout winter.
