David Koffel advised me this morning that he had just checked this spot
at Oatley where a Black-necked Stork was seen but unfortunately without
success. He said there was quite a bit boat activity in the area.
>From my experience, Black-necked Storks do not like to be around places
where there is too much human activity (I would be interested to hear if
anyone has experienced otherwise), and where I have seen them in places
around Newcastle (a little north of Sydney) and interstate it is often
only me/and a few other people with a wary bird or two (an exception
would be probably the Yellow Water Cruise in Kakadu).
Given that there are potentially 2 Black-necked Storks at the moment in
Sydney (John Reidy reported a pair early this year near Homebush), I
would recommend people keeping a lookout for the Storks in much quieter
areas of wetland habitat around Sydney (perhaps the western shores of
Prospect Reservoir viewed from the picnic area or even Towra Pt in
Botany Bay). They may have even moved on much further south down along
the coast from Sydney (Who knows!).
It would be nice if a pair of these birds do decide to settle in Sydney
given their previous absence of 20 or more years to the region.
