Hi All,
Regarding Bob and Frank's discussion about Little/Brush Wattlebird
taxonomy, I thought it might be useful to mention the reason why the
subject was broached in the first place. We have created an interactive
image database on the web (abbreviated to ABID) on
http://www.aviceda.org/abid/ where 'users' can upload their images
(traditional or digital). Although this is intended to be used as a
'resource' and as 'accurate' as an (untrained) bird-enthusiast can make
it, the content should not be taken as gospel, there is plenty of
far-more useful literature based on well-research data by learned
academics. Hopefully by having discussions such as this we can clarify
some points though and enlighten ourselves, albeit in a less-formal
manner than by using out-dated taxonomic checklists.
Please note that I have clearly stated on our introduction page on
http://www.aviceda.org/abid/aboutus.php "Basically, this is an
exhibition of images and not a taxonomic resource."
Bob found a discrepancy with the Little/Brush Wattlebird taxonomy where
contributors (including myself!) have been uploading incorrect(?) images
to both species, but from their ensuing discussions I have decided to
use two species Western and Little Wattlebird and placed all images into
their (hopefully correct) location-based table, however I'm not prepared
to change contributors comments or captions, so if they haved called a
species "Brush" rather than "Little"Wattlebird then only they should
change it.
I am fully aware of other such problems but due to time-constraints (I
have a vocation which does not include birding.....very often!) I don't
have a lot of time to look over contentious images so I would welcome
anyone checking species such as Clamorous/Australian Reed-Warbler,
Richards/Australasian Pipit, Australian Black-shouldered/Black-winged
Kite, Little/Black-backed Bittern Pied/Black-winged Stilt etc and
helping me to catalogue them in more logical places.
Look forward to your comments (...and assistance!)
