I've had some excellent feedback to my query about the status of Grey
butcherbirds around Colac and in western Victoria in general.
Thwe Victorian Atlas has numerous records along the surf coast and in the Otways
- certainly extending to Colac. There are records along the coast to about
Warrnambool but they don't seem to occur very far inland. Rob Farnes has
records
in the stones country north east of Warrnambool and there are a few records
around Portland. There is a small number of records in the Grampians.
Basically the birds are essentially absent from the Volcanic Plain and scarce in
the far sw corner.
Interestingly - there have been two recent sightings of Pied Butcherbirds in the
south west (Drik Drik and Casterton).
