Hi Bob and others,
We spent a couple of hours on Tues 5th looking for the Black-necked Stork
without any luck.
We were able to get to 'Sandbank' and found a quite large wooded wetland on the
north side of Wallden Rd and west of Dickie Rd, using the directions provided.
From this point I telephoned Keith Renison who was happy to talk and told me
that the sighting had actually been on the south side of this road. We checked
there, quite a small area, and while it had been wet and a dam in the middle
was still full, the area was now dry and both the Stork and the Brolga were not
present.
We then spent some time searching the large wetland (from the close adjacent
roads as there were no trespassing signs) and there were many waterfowl there.
We were unable to find either of the target birds, but they certainly may have
been present.
We then went on to camp on the Murray on private property on Brimmin Rd (near
Brimmin Lodge). There was a pair of Brolga on the further north of two small
ephemeral wetlands on the west of Brimmin Rd. We told the long term friend we
were camping with (who lives in Rutherglen) of our search and he informed us
that he had seen a pair of Jabiru near St James (about 10km S of Tungamah)
'several years ago'.
