Vic-SA Mallee 05 Trip Report

Geoff Walker and I have just completed a trip, 12/03/05 to 19/03/05, from
Melbourne taking in the Mallee of Vic and SA and ending at Pt Fairy for the
BA pelagic trip.

The weather was initially hot and still, but changed after three days to be
cooler with wind. There was some rain on the day of the change.

We visited Lake Tyrell, Hattah Lakes NP, Mildura Tip, Yarrara CP, western
section of Murray-Sunset NP, Billiatt CP, Mt. Lofty, Belair NP, Mt Compass
wetlands, Tolderol GR, Mt Rescue CP, Pink Lakes, Little Desert NP, Mt
Eccles NP, Pt. Fairy.

We camped most of the time with strategic stays in motels when it suited.

We saw 174 species on the trip (excluding the pelagic trip) and covered
about 3000 kms.

Targeted species or subspecies seen (including 'Life Subspecies',
'Vic-Species' and 'Vic-Subspecies') were:-

Treecreeper, White-throated , grisescens - Mt Lofty 
Treecreeper, White-browed , affinis - Yarrara CP 
Emu-wren, Southern , intermedius - Mt. Compass wetlands
Grasswren, Striated , striatus - Hattah Lakes NP Nowingi Track
Scrubwren, White-browed , rosinae - Mt Lofty
Fieldwren, Rufous , campestris - Lake Tyrell
Fieldwren, Rufous , winiam - Little Desert NP, low heath, to w of paddock w
of Nhill-Harrow rd 20k s of Nhill
Thornbill, Buff-rumped , australis - Little Desert NP, Kiata Campground
Honeyeater, Yellow-faced , samueli - Mt Lofty
Babbler, Chestnut-crowned , - Hattah Lakes NP, Mournpall Track, 1.5 k n of
Konardin Track
Woodswallow, Black-faced , melanops - Lake Tyrell
Crow, Little , - Mildura Tip
Thrush, Bassian , halmaturina - Mt Lofty
