Sunshine Coast workshop gives insight into elusive fig-parrot
Sunshine Coast residents can attend an informative training workshop to
assist in the recovery of the endangered Coxen’s fig-parrot.
The Coxen’s fig-parrot: Information day and training workshop will
provide participants with the necessary skills to search for and
reliably identify the species, and help in the current recovery program.
The workshop will aim to broaden the pool of local bird watchers
keeping an eye out for the elusive bird.
The Coxen’s fig-parrot is listed as endangered under the Nature
Conservation Act 1992, and is one of Australia’s rarest and least known
birds.
Relatively few observations have been recorded and no photographs or
sound recordings of the parrot are known to exist.
Credible sightings have been made in the Noosa hinterland including
areas near Cooran and Kin Kin.The workshop will cover the bird’s
features, behaviour, ecology and nesting biology, as well as
recommended techniques for spotting the cryptic species.
The small, predominantly green parrot has a short tail and dumpy build,
with a total length of 14 to 16cm. It has rich green feathering on top
of the body and yellowish green below.
The workshop will be held on Sunday 20 March, 2005, at the Rural
Futures Network Pavilion Street, Pomona, at 12:00-4:00pm. More

parrots at Burgess Creek in the Noosa National Park.
