Visited Minnippi on Saturday morning - nothing to write home about
although activity certainly up on recent weeks.
Oxley Common on Sunday and some good birds - Buff-banded Rail beside
'Pelican's Island' waterhole. Just a little further down the track
(before the culvert) a single Plum-headed Finch in excellent view on the
wire fence feeding on grass seeds quite unconcernedly. While watching
this guy, movement low overhead raised our eyes to a small number
(probably 2 or 3 only) of Fork-tailed Swifts flying 'low' (down to about
20 meters overhead?) - excellent views. Fifteen minutes later one of the
Swifts zoomed down over the water (3 meters?) - very low and again
excellent views were had.
(We had had a WTNT earlier and there were a few around scattered amongs
Fairy and Tree Martins, Swallows and a White-breasted Wood-swallow! -
Clear skies, no storms, no rain, little breeze, altho later in the day a
strong coastal wind sprung up)
Keep an eye out for discussion relating to Oxley Common - it's not as
safe and secure as it appears.
