It has been a hot summer's day in our area - around 40C. Still, when up at
5:30 am and spotting for birds at first light, it wasn't too bad. In fact it
was quite a good day birding wise. Following up on a couple of good
sightings for our area by my mate Simon Starr, I went over to Murphy's Lake,
which is a great spot for birds when it contains water. I met up with Tom
Lowe and his wife, and also ran into Keith Stockwell and John and Pam Lamb.
The best birds here were the RUFF Simon previously reported, and also two
BLACK-TAILED GODWITS. Good to see three BROLGA fly over head too. There have
been FRECKLED DUCK here for awhile, and Tom and I reckoned there were about
130 this morning - some in breeding colour. Also good numbers of other ducks
and waders. We saw about 65 species here. I then spent a couple of hours in
the noon day heat at Hird Swamp. Highlights here were PAINTED SNIPE, LITTLE
and AUSTRALASIAN BITTERNS & SPOTLESS CRAKE. There were about 50 species
seen. Thousands of Straw-necked Ibis have descended on Hird Swamp and some
have commenced to breed at Hirds so parts are 'closed' at present because of
this. There is a surprising number of species still breeding in the area.
Black Swan, Ibis, some ducks, Diamond Firetails in our garden etc. Though a
bit hot, it was a good day. The species list for both sites and birds seen
going to & fro is below - about 103 species.

Corella, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Yellow form of Crimson Rosella, Eastern
Rosella, Red-rumped Parrot, Horsefield's Bronze-Cuckoo, Southern Boobook,
Laughing Kookaburra, (Rainbow Bee-eaters seem to have left until next
